23 Elegant Fall Decor Ideas to Try This Fall

Let’s talk fall decor. As the leaves start to turn and the air gets crisp, it’s time to give your space a seasonal refresh. But here’s the thing – you don’t need to go overboard with pumpkins and leaves plastered on every surface. A few well-placed items and some creative thrifting, shopping, and DIYs will give you a unique fall decor look that doesn’t look like it comes directly from a craft store.

Read on if you love fall but want a more understated or eclectic approach! I’ve put together 23 fall decor ideas that are stylish, effortless, and far from basic. I’ll share thrift tips, recommendations, and DIY tricks along the way. Fall is my absolute favorite season to decorate for and I know I’m not alone in that. Whether you’re into subtle nods to the season or ready to embrace fall vibes fully, something on this list is sure to work for you. So grab your favorite fall beverage (no judgment if it’s a PSL), and let’s dive into these decor ideas that’ll make you fall in love with your home this fall!

Start with a Plan and See What You Already Have

I am mildly obsessed with fall and Halloween and usually start planning my decor in mid-August as I not-so-patiently wait for summer to end. Because of this, I am a sucker for fall decor (and Halloween) and it is so tempting to grab those first few cute fall decor items I spot in stores. But to be a more responsible consumer, I try to wait to buy new decor until after I’ve gone to the basement and carted out my fall/ Halloween bins and made my plans. I’m also trying to make a lot of it myself- stay tuned for more that!

I may have broken my own rule this year as we already purchased a couple of cute Jack-o-lanterns and ghost pillows we couldn’t pass up. The kids are growing up fast and we only have so many Halloweens with them when they’re young, so we wanted to do it up this year!

Also, we moved Nomember 1st last year, so our Halloween was pretty minimal last year with all the moving stress. This year, I have some making up to do!

But in general, I recommend shopping for your home before heading out to the thrift or discount stores. This practice will help you reduce clutter in your home, save money, and be a more sustainable shopper.

Look at you, saving the world with your conscientious home decor habits.

Living Room Fall Decor: Cozy Blankets and Throws

You don’t have to have pillows or blankets that feature ghosts, pumpkins, or maple leaves to create a fall atmosphere in your home. But of course, you can if you want to!- I like a mix of understated, spooky, and cutesy when it comes to my Halloween/ fall Decor.

1. Moody Throw Blankets

Something as simple as switching up your throw blanket can help evoke a sense of fall coziness in your home. Opt for a dark moody color to make your living room the place to be as the fall chill sets in.

2. Rust and Plaid

Swapping pillow covers can be a great way to update your seasonal decor. You could even try your hand at making your seasonal pillows or cases.

You can also rotate your artwork to feature autumnal tones to change up the look of any room without obvious decor.

3. Bright Autumn Tones

You can keep your space light and airy in fall by pairing your bright fall hues with bright creams and white.

Adding real mini pumpkins to a wooden bowl is a great way to honor the season.

Console and Coffee Table Fall Decor

Create little fall decor moments around your home on coffee tables, console tables, and sideboards.

4. Dried Florals to Celebrate the Season

Fall means the harvest season is upon up and traditionally, displaying floral indoors is a mark of reverence for growth of the past season and way to bring it inside to prepare for the darker, leaner, season ahead.

Dark florals make for a wonderful fall statement, but I’m not crazy about the idea of buying plastic greenery. If you can, try to forage something from your yard or local area and dry it for display. If that isn’t an option or you prefer faux florals, try getting them secondhand. Look at thrift stores or Facebook Marketplace.

The star of this photo is clearly the sleeping pup on the couch. A dog can be the perfect decor addition for any season. And just like most of my decor recommendations, I recommend getting your dog secondhand too! That is from a shelter! Far too many sweet pups need forever homes #adoptdon’tshop!

5. Brass Vessels with Seasonal Fruit and Florals

Aged brass automatically feels cozy and autumnal to me, but it is especially so when paired with dried florals.

6. Matte Ceramic Pots and Vessels

Another great thrifting opportunity! Get any pot or vessel that appeals to you and give it a vintage makeover! There are several ways to age or add texture to pottery, but my favorite is adding baking soda to paint to give it a matte and textured look.

Pair the matte ceramic look with anything brass for a cozy, timeless fall feel that invites you to stay home.

7. Unique Decor: Candles and Busts

Finding eclectic fall decor pieces will give your home a unique and cozy look. Keep an open mind and get creative, look for interesting items that could work as vessels for dried florals and vintage candle sticks.

Adding a seasonally scented candle is a subtle way to help bring fall indoors.

Fall Tablescapes- Everday and Holiday

From daily dinners to holiday gatherings, a little fall decor can go a long way!

8. Elegant Fall Dinner Party

This tablescape is the epitome of simple elegance. A simple neutral table runner, some fresh greenery, a handful of small pumpkins, and some brass candle sticks.

This is the perfect decor for any fall dinner party.

Or try a festive outdoor dinner for those last few warm autumn evenings!

9. Simple Everyday Table Decor

For every day, opt for a simple centerpiece that includes florals (freshly forgaged if possible) and simple candles.

Resuable cloth napkins will make even an everyday dinner feel a little more celebratory, and they’re great for the planet too.

Swapping Your Shelf Decor For Fall

Switching up your shelf decor can have a big impact on any room. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for a little cleaning to refresh your space as we prepare for winter where most of us will be spending a little more time indoors.

10. Copper and Dried Florals

I love vintage copper and it is something that is always on my thrift list. Pair your copper with dried flowers to celebrate the harvest season.

11. Amber Glass

Amber Glass is perfect for fall. Try thrift stores and FB Market Place to get vintage bottles. I thrifted some beautiful amber bottles for our completely DIY November wedding, that I now use in our fall decor.

12. Subtle Fall Touches

Swapping florals for autumn colors or adding pine cones can be a simple seasonal swap that will add a lot of warmth to your home.

Add a few drops of your favorite fall essential oil to your pine cones to add a layer of seasonal scent to your fall decor. I love cedar and cinnamon oil this time of year, but since we have three dogs, I can’t use cinnamon oil. I am still working on creating dog-friendly holiday essential oil blends. If you have pets, I suggest you read this article on pet-safe oils to protect your furry friends!

Fall Decor for Your Kitchen

Decorating a wooden, ceramic, or basket tray is a simple and elegant way to add a touch of fall decor to your kitchen.

13. Neutral and Vintage

Keep it simple and homey with vintage cookbooks, a candle, and a wooden bowl filled with white pumpkins.

14. Island Statement

Dried greenery or florals in a simple vessel on a wooden tray can make an excellent seasonal focal point, sure to warm up your island.

15. Fall Vignette in The Corner

Set up a little display on your countertop with wooden cutting board, a vintage cook book, a vessel with florals and a wooden bowl with seasonal fruit.

Bedroom Fall Decor

16. Layering Neutrals and Plaid

Create an ultra-cozy fall bedroom with layered duvets and a rustic throw blanket.

17. Moody Autumnal Tones

Give your bedroom a moody fall makeover to create a cozy space to settle into for the colder months ahead.

Opt for a neutral-toned linen duvet with a chunky knit throw blanket to create this look.

Fall Decor For Your Bathroom

Adding seasonal decor to your bathroom is a subtle way to make your home feel extra cozy.

18. Add a Touch of Autumn

Swap your regular hand soap for a fun seasonal scent. Bonus the fun scent just might encourage your kids to properly wash their hands, which will help keep the whole family feeling better this fall!

19. Add a Little Color

Add a pop of color to your bathroom with seasonal floral and ceramic pots in earthy hues.

Fall Porch Decor + Fall Wreaths

Porch decor can help establish that fall feeling the moment you walk into your door.

20. Harvest Florals and Pumpkins

For a simple and elegant fall display that feels organic, find two large vessels, add dried florals, and surround them with pumpkins.

Note: if you don’t carve your pumpkins, they can be donated to local animal sanctuaries! Many farm animals like goats and pigs absolutely love pumpkins!

21. Dried Grass and Plaid

If you are like me and still have dried pampas grass around from that decor craze a few years ago, this might be a good way to make use of it! Use it to create a harvest display paired with a minimal brown rug and plaid throw.

Tip: Look at a thrift store for a plaid shirt or sheet set to recreate this look without putting a nice blanket outside.

22. Eclectic Nature-Infused Wreath

Get in touch with your creative side and make your own fall wreath. Wreath making has a long history and their significance varies by culture, but broadly in the West, wreaths are a symbol of the circle of life, (sometimes interpreted as eternal life), fertility, protection, and broadly a reverence of nature, and specific seasons such as harvest in the fall and growth in the spring.

If you want to make your own wreath, you can start with a wreath base and add your own fresh, dried, or faux florals. You can often find inexpensive wreaths at thrift stores that you could work from. Or one of my favorite tricks is thrifting embroidery hoops and using those for wreath armature.

Finish it off with a gorgeous rustic velvet ribbon in a deep red, rust, auburn, or brown shade that will work all fall and winter.

23. Wicker, Grass, and Greenery

Use any wreath base and add florals and these wicker pumpkins for a harvest wreath that honors the season.

Easy Fall Decor That Fits Your Style

There you have it – 23 ways to bring fall into your space without it looking like a craft store exploded in your living room. From entryway to bedroom, we’ve hit all the spots that could use a touch of autumn.

Here’s the deal: the best fall decor is whatever makes you feel good in your space. Mix these ideas, tweak them, make them your own. Maybe you’ll pair that minimalist wreath with some moody candlelight, or perhaps you’ll create a centerpiece that’s part family heirloom, part foraged finds. The possibilities are endless.

Fall decor doesn’t have to mean a complete overhaul. Sometimes it’s as simple as swapping out a few pillows or adding a strategically placed pumpkin (real or faux, I don’t judge). It’s all about creating a vibe that feels right for you.

The frame of our newish couch broke, but thanks to The frame of our newish couch broke, but thanks to a service warranty, we got it checked out. Turns out, a knot in the wood caused a main support bar to crack in three directions—bad enough that the repair guy wanted to haul the whole couch to the shop for a few days. That sounded awful, so I asked if he could get it started and show me how to finish the job.

He was awesome, walked me through the first part, and left me with wood glue and torque screws. A few hours later, the couch was back in business.

A few years ago, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to tackle something like this, but learning to DIY has changed that. It may seem like a small thing to some, but I love the confidence that building and repairing things in my own home has brought me. DIY is about learning, problem-solving, getting creative, and most importantly—trying.

What did Michael Jordan say? “You miss 100% of the couches you don’t fix?” Oh wait, that might have been Michael Scott. Either way, I’m glad I went for it.

Our Christmas was majorly interrupted by the flu t Our Christmas was majorly interrupted by the flu this year. We had to cancel all of our plans, including our annual Christmas Eve party, which was a major letdown. I was down for the count for a few weeks, so the holiday decor stuck around a little longer than usual… like, into the second week of January.

Then CapCut decided to dip for a minute, and this reel got stuck in limbo. But it’s back, I am mostly recovered, and our regular decor is back in place.

As much as I love Christmas decor, it feels good to have a clean, minimal living room again. All of my plants are back in place, we hung up some new artwork, and added wireless sconces above our mantle that pull everything together and brighten up the room.

Flocking is similar to velvet in appearance and texture, but unlike velvet, which is a woven fabric, flocking is made from small, short fibers called "flock" which are adhered to a surface with an adhesive.

The full tutorial on my blog breaks down how to make them using simple materials most people already have at home—acrylic paint and baking soda.
