The Cutest Checkered Frame DIY for Moody Fall Vibes
This is honestly one of my favorite DIY craft projects — it’s so cute and came together in no time! Using a thrifted frame, some painter’s tape, and acrylic paint, I created a custom DIY checkered frame that fits perfectly with my moody fall decor and modern-vintage home. Thrifting the Perfect Wood Frame for My DIY Checkered Frame
I’m that kind of thrifter who always picks up frames — I can’t help it. This one came from a little local thrift store for just $2 (real thrift store prices!). It had a cherry veneer, which worked fine, but if you’re recreating this look, I recommend using a solid wood frame so the painter’s tape doesn’t pull up the veneer- an issue I encountered.
For this project, you’ll need:
- A frame (wood or whatever pattern/material you prefer)
- 1-inch blue painter’s tape
- Acrylic paint (I used an ivory off-white)
- Paintbrush and water
Start by taping off the glass and any areas you want to keep the natural wood tone. Then, use strips of painter’s tape to create a checkered pattern — one inch taped, one inch open, alternating around the border. It doesn’t have to be perfect; a little imperfection adds charm! Just make sure your stripes start evenly on opposite sides so the pattern looks balanced.

Once you’re happy with your tape placement, mix a small amount of water into your acrylic paint to make it smooth but not runny. I used unbleached titanium, an off-white ivory color.
Paint the exposed squares. I did two coats, letting each dry for an hour or two. After it’s fully dry, carefully remove the tape.
Pro Tip
If the paint starts to lift, lightly score the edge with an X-Acto knife to prevent peeling.
Pop in your favorite print, and you’ve got yourself the cutest checkered frame — totally custom and perfect for moody fall or modern vintage decor. I styled mine with a Halloween print I got of Etsy, on my new shaker peg shelf I recently built (you can read about that DIY here) and love how the warm wood and check pattern play together.
