Halloween Decor House Tour 2024: Slightly Spooky Eclectic Halloween

I absolutely love Halloween and Halloween decor, but October has been flying by this year! And I haven’t had enough time to celebrate. With only about 13 days left, it’s time to get into the spirit! This weekend, my family and I are staying in, lighting our spooky candles, making treats, and enjoying all the Halloween classics.

While I still have some celebrating to do, I decorated for Halloween in early September, when spooky season officially starts. This is our first year in this house and am still finding my home and holiday decor style here, but I am happy with how things turned out this year.

As our kids have gotten a bit older, I’ve decided to mostly skip the bright plastic decorations this year and go for a more minimalistic approach. We’ve added a few new Halloween decor items, but most of what we’re using is either thrifted or something we already had on hand.

If you’re looking for fun and spooky, but still somewhat elegant, eclectic, and inviting Halloween decor ideas, join me for a tour of my home, showcasing some of my favorite Halloween decor ideas!

The Fireplace Mantle: A Cozy Spooky Centerpiece

Let’s start with the heart of the home—the fireplace mantle. This space is perfect for creating a focal point that captures the essence of Halloween.

For this year’s decor, I chose a classic Halloween color scheme of black, white, orange, and green. I have my style when it comes to Halloween, but I also have three stepkids. So I need to balance my Halloween decor aesthetic between my eclectic vintage style and the cute, spooky vibe that our kids will love. Here’s how I (hopefully) achieved that balance!

I incorporated several thrifted vases, vessels, and pieces of art into the decor, along with various Halloween items I already had on hand. This year, we added a glowing jack-o’-lantern, a skeleton, and a few pumpkin pillows specifically for the kids. These elements help create a fun and inviting atmosphere that appeals to everyone!

To add warmth and ambiance, I placed a couple of flickering LED candles on the end of the mantle. These battery-operated candles create a soft glow that mimics real candlelight, making the space feel cozy and inviting. I also included candle holders in varying heights for added visual interest. I thrifted these faux brass candlesticks last year for my Christmas decor, and I love how they turned out, so I keep them out all year.

I also found a charming black and cream beaded garland at Target that complements the decor perfectly.

DIY Clay Ghosts to Finish the Mantle Decor

Finally, I added a whimsical touch with a few handcrafted clay ghosts. Simple and cute, these ghosts are made of air-dried clay and make a fun craft for any age. If you’re interested in making your own clay ghosts, you can read the full tutorial here

They add a playful yet refined touch to the mantle, embodying the spirit of Halloween.

Wreaths: Welcoming Guests with Seasonal Charm

A wreath is a perfect way to greet guests while setting the tone for your Halloween decor. Instead of a spooky wreath, I opted for a minimalistic and natural approach using eucalyptus branches with flowers and greenery from our yard. What can I say? I am multi-faceted.

I love spooky decor, but I also love to tune in and connect to the earth, especially during the change of the season. This year, I made two wreaths, some herb bundles, and a dried floral arrangement from things I gathered from our yard.

I left the spooky stuff in the living room and kid’s spaces and kept our dining room minimal and still in line with my earthy, organic modern style.

These matte black candlesticks are so pretty and worth keeping out year-round. They look great with these rope candles I found in the Target Dollar Spot area. Plus the the green and black colors will carry into my Christmas decor.

An Inviting Entrance

We have a pretty small entryway with just a shoe closet and a console table. I kept this area pretty minimal but I did hang some floating candles above for the kids!

I found this darling ghost candy bowl at TJ Maxx. Get a similar one here.

Floating Candles: A Magical Touch + Decorating our Built-on Shelves

One of my favorite decor ideas for Halloween is the enchanting use of floating candles. This whimsical touch can transform any space into a magical setting, perfect for Halloween gatherings and spooky movie nights.

I have to say, I am not a Harry Potter person and didn’t even know this idea was based on the series. I stumbled upon this on Pinterest and had to recreate it. It is so fun and the kids love it, but also #transrightsarehumanrights.

I used these floating candles, fishing line, and nano tape to help them float. But, a few have fallen so I don’t recommend the nano tape for this purpose. That stuff is still awesome though for many other tasks. I might re-hang the floating candles with clear command hooks.

This year I thrifted the above candle holders and this darling lantern below.

Incorporating My Houseplants into Our Halloween Decor

How cute are these?

The kids absolutely loved this simple DIY- it’s just eyeballs from the dollar store hot glued to long craft sticks!

Porch Halloween Decor

I haven’t finished our porch decor yet. I keep meaning to, but life is busy. And honestly, it was a super hot summer here and all our plants and grass around the porch died and it looks awful right now. So enjoy these unnecessarily moody black-and-white pictures that hide how run down our front yard is at the moment.

I plan to add a few more things and clean up a bit if I can find some time. Wish me luck!

Finding Your Vibe for Halloween Decor

As we conclude this year’s Halloween Decor House Tour, I hope you feel inspired to embrace your personal style in your Halloween decor and have a little fun with it. Finding that perfect balance between fun and elegance can transform your space into a cozy haven for the season. By opting for a mix of spooky and eclectic decor, I’ve created a warm and fun atmosphere that welcomes both family and friends and doesn’t feel like a craft store.

With just a few days left until Halloween, take a moment to enjoy the little things. Like lighting your favorite candles, sharing treats, watching your favorite Halloween movies, and creating memories with loved ones. Let your decor reflect your personal style while celebrating the playful spirit of the holiday. If want a few ideas for celebrating spooky season with your family, check out this article.

The frame of our newish couch broke, but thanks to The frame of our newish couch broke, but thanks to a service warranty, we got it checked out. Turns out, a knot in the wood caused a main support bar to crack in three directions—bad enough that the repair guy wanted to haul the whole couch to the shop for a few days. That sounded awful, so I asked if he could get it started and show me how to finish the job.

He was awesome, walked me through the first part, and left me with wood glue and torque screws. A few hours later, the couch was back in business.

A few years ago, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to tackle something like this, but learning to DIY has changed that. It may seem like a small thing to some, but I love the confidence that building and repairing things in my own home has brought me. DIY is about learning, problem-solving, getting creative, and most importantly—trying.

What did Michael Jordan say? “You miss 100% of the couches you don’t fix?” Oh wait, that might have been Michael Scott. Either way, I’m glad I went for it.

Our Christmas was majorly interrupted by the flu t Our Christmas was majorly interrupted by the flu this year. We had to cancel all of our plans, including our annual Christmas Eve party, which was a major letdown. I was down for the count for a few weeks, so the holiday decor stuck around a little longer than usual… like, into the second week of January.

Then CapCut decided to dip for a minute, and this reel got stuck in limbo. But it’s back, I am mostly recovered, and our regular decor is back in place.

As much as I love Christmas decor, it feels good to have a clean, minimal living room again. All of my plants are back in place, we hung up some new artwork, and added wireless sconces above our mantle that pull everything together and brighten up the room.

Making lemon ginger turmeric shots today as our fa Making lemon ginger turmeric shots today as our family is fighting our first major cold of the season. They are my go-to immune-boosting, antioxidant-packed drink that gets me through winter when our kids seem to bring home every possible variation of cold and flu. (A few weeks ago, it was scarlet fever—scarlet fever! What is this, the 1700s?)

These immunity shots combine:

Lemon for a hefty dose of vitamin C
Ginger, a powerful anti-inflammatory
Turmeric, another anti-inflammatory
A touch of maple syrup for sweetness
A crack of black pepper to activate curcumin, turmeric’s potent antioxidant
Stay ahead of the winter colds and read the blog for the full recipe!

It's hard to pick my favorite Christmas DIY this y It's hard to pick my favorite Christmas DIY this year, but these flocked ornaments are definitely near the top of the list. What is flocking? Flocking is similar to velvet in appearance and texture, but unlike velvet, which is a woven fabric, flocking is made from small, short fibers called "flock" which are adhered to a surface with an adhesive.

The full tutorial on my blog breaks down how to make them using simple materials most people already have at home—acrylic paint and baking soda.
