Every Halloween, our kids come home with so much Halloween candy—pillowcases stuffed with the sweet rewards of several hours of daunting (or maybe haunting) trick-or-treating. It’s exciting, chaotic, and magical, but what on earth are we supposed to do with all that candy?
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering how much sugar is too much or dealing with littles ones with a stomach ache after finding that limit, let me introduce you to a spooky little helper: the Switch Witch.

Halloween in Our House: Costumes, Chaos, and Candy, So Much Candy
We love Halloween. Well, mostly me and the kids, my husband is Jim from The Office and can barely stand to dress, much to my eternal chargrin. Our three kids go all out on costumes and trick-or-treating—and after several hours, they come home with mountains of loot.
It’s Halloween candy, Halloween candy, and more Halloween candy. Buckets full. It’s a dream for them… and a bit of a dilemma for us- sort of.
Our Food Philosophy: Intuitive Eating, Even on Halloween
In our house, we try to follow a relaxed and respectful approach to food. This doesn’t always work out, an it’s been a hard-fought battle for a few years, but we’re in a good place with it now.
In our home, we aim for intuitive eating, where we, the parents, decide what’s available, and our kids decide what goes in their bodies.
We don’t have dessert every night, but when we do, we enjoy it. Whether it’s s’mores night or birthday cake at a party, we don’t make a big fuss. No good food/bad food labels. No pressure. And surprisingly, because sweets aren’t forbidden or hyped up, they don’t become such a big deal. A lesson we learned after being pretty restrictive with them.
Still, when it comes to Halloween candy, things get trickier. It’s just so much—and it tends to linger.
Meet the Switch Witch: A Spooky Sweet Solution
This is where the Switch Witch comes in. She’s a magical Halloween creature who collects extra candy from kids in exchange for a small gift. It’s a little spooky, a little silly, and totally magical.
Here’s how it works: Let your kids enjoy their candy on Halloween night. Then have them pick 10–15 favorite pieces to keep. The rest goes into a bowl, box, or even a cauldron to be left out overnight for the Switch Witch to collect.
By morning, she’s swapped the candy for a small present—something fun, surprising, and just for them.
You can make this tradition as simple or elaborate as you want. The Switch Witch might leave a spooky poem, a glittery trail, or just a surprise toy or book.
The kids get something they’ll love, the excess candy disappears, and everyone wins.
What to Do With All That Halloween Candy
Once the Switch Witch has done her part, what do you do with the leftovers?
Here are a few easy, thoughtful ways to pass it along:
- You can donate it to a local food pantry, shelter, or senior center (just call ahead to confirm they accept individually wrapped candy).
- You can bring it to work—coworkers tend to make candy disappear quickly.
- Or you can make kindness bags: I like to keep small snack bags in the car with granola bars, fruit snacks, and yes—a little Halloween candy. They’re easy to hand out to unhoused neighbors or anyone in need.
Halloween Candy Can Be Magical, Not Stressful
Halloween doesn’t have to be a sugar-fueled stress fest. With a little intention—and maybe a visit from the Switch Witch—you can enjoy the fun without the leftovers haunting your pantry for weeks.
Happy Haunting! 🎃
