8 Home Design Trends to Know in 2024 From an Interior Decorating Student and New Homeowner

As a new homeowner and aspiring Certified Interior Decorator, I’ve been diving deep into the world of home design trends for 2024 (and 2025) while planning the design for our new home. It’s fascinating to see how our living spaces continue to evolve, reflecting not just aesthetic preferences but also our changing lifestyles and values. In this post, I’ll share my insights on the key trends shaping home interiors this year, drawing from both my studies and personal experiences as I navigate decorating my own home.

From the resurgence of warm, earthy tones to the growing emphasis on unique, functional, and sustainable home decor, 2024 is all about creating homes that are both beautiful and practical. And that is right up my alley. Join me as we explore these trends together – whether you’re a fellow design enthusiast or simply looking to refresh your living space. I hope you’ll find inspiration in the styles and concepts we’ll discuss.

Let’s delve into these 8 2024 home design trends and discover how they might influence our own unique decor styles!

How I Got Into Home Decor

I have always been a creative person who appreciates aesthetics. But it wasn’t until my 30s and being a first-time homeowner that I discovered that somewhere inside me was the obsessive urge to make every inch of my home my own through decor and DIY. Can anyone else relate? The drive to decorate is strong!

My first serious foray into interior decorating started 2 and 1/2 years ago while planning a complete renovation at our old house. We ultimately decided that redoing the entire house to almost fit our wish list didn’t make sense, so we moved instead. We love our new house, but the partially round kitchen hasn’t been updated since the 80s, so we made plans for that renovation which should hopefully start in early 2025. Designing a partially round kitchen was a challenge, to say the least, but I am so happy with our final plans.

I am someone who likes to understand how things work and I have a pretty particular aesthetic. So I wanted to be very involved in all aspects of planning. I made digital drawings over photos of our home; 3d renderings in design programs; mood boards on Canva; and saved thousands of images on Pinterest.

During all of that, I discovered I have a serious love of interior decorating and design. And because I am a Type A person who loves school, I decided to pursue a certification as an Interior Decorator. I want to learn the fundamentals of interior decorating for my own edification and decorating my own home.

Differentiating Styles In Design Trends

Being somewhat new to all this, I initially struggled with parsing out the distinct elements of different home decor styles. Initially, it seemed like there was a lot of overlap between certain home decor styles like minimalism and organic modern design. And more yet between organic modern and modern vintage. So I set out to learn the hallmarks of each style and while there absolutely is considerable overlap between the styles, it is becoming easier to see their differences or defining characteristics. Which I’ll explain below!

What Design Trends Will Work for Your Home?

Finding your personal home decor style takes time! While there are no rules, understanding the nuts and bolts of why certain design styles work can help with your space. I personally feel pulled in several directions when it comes to decorating our home. My thoughts over the last few months went something like this: I love the simple and clean look of minimalist spaces, but I am not into the entirely white or beige vibe. I absolutely love a lot of warmth, color (earth tones), wood, plants, and nature, so organic modern design really appeals to me. But I may have a few too many houseplants for the clean and minimalist aesthetic of organic modern design.

I also really love thrifting, unique pieces, vintage or vintage-inspired decor, and spaces that are a little moody. So maybe I should aim for a more maximalist modern vintage vibe? And while I absolutely love the color-drenching trend, we just painted everything white and I’m not ready to paint again! The whole house was painted dark grey and brown when we moved in, so we went with white to brighten everything up! And although I am interested, I am a little afraid of committing to bold-colored walls! So for now I’ll stick to adding color with furniture, plants, and art.

Lastly, I want to bake bread and pretend I live in a charming cottage in the woods. But I actually live just outside a major city and I can’t eat gluten. As you can see, I was a little confused and unsure how to proceed with my own home decor.

Determining My Own Personal Home Decor Style

But after 8 months of living in this house, studying interior decorating, and spending probably too much time on Pinterest, I have a clear vision of what I want my home to look like.

Now I have to figure out how to make that happen, but that is a problem for another day!

I know I am not the only one trying to understand all the different popular home decor trends and struggling to find their home decor style. So I wanted to share what I learned with the hope of helping others find their own unique home decor styles.

This post will mostly focus on defining the trends to get an overview of the style. Which might help you narrow down what styles you like.

Of course, your home doesn’t have to be entirely one style. Your home should be a reflection of you and that probably won’t neatly fit into any one of these boxes. However I find it useful to understand the hallmarks of the style as well as some foundational design concepts. So I can make informed decisions while selecting home decor elements that I love.

I broke down the process of finding your interior style in the article below. Read that article after this one and you should have a pretty solid foundation to work from!

Mixing Design Trends to Make Your Home Yours

Design trends don’t occur in a vacuum, they exist in response or within the context of one another and the rest of the world. Much like most of your home decor. Most of us have collected furniture, decor, and art from different places over the years. Meaning, that not all of it will fit perfectly into one style of decor. Not only is this not a problem, this is how it should be!

Your home should be a reflection of you and your story. Creating a curated and personal collection will imbue your home with personality and warmth.

Don’t worry about staying in the confines of one particular style. Instead, consider what it is about each of these styles that continues to captivate our attention year after year.

The Enduring Allure of Minimalism Meets Modern Organic

Minimalism has been a mainstay in the world of interior design for years. And this timeless aesthetic shows no signs of slowing down in 2024. In fact, the minimalist design trend is poised to evolve and adapt to the changing needs and preferences of modern homeowners.

At the heart of the minimalist approach lies a focus on simplicity, functionality, and a deliberate reduction of clutter. I think a lot of us who grew up in dark, cluttered, kitschy houses in the 80s and 90s now feel kind of anxious in cluttered spaces. And are drawn to cleaner and brighter home decor aesthetics. There is also an aspect of mindfulness regarding both consumption and the environment that is essential to the ethos of minimalism. Those ideas resonate with many people in our busy and increasingly eco-conscious world.

One of the key drivers behind the enduring popularity of minimalist interior design is the desire for a serene, calming environment that provides a respite from the chaos of daily life. As we navigate an increasingly fast-paced and technology-driven world, the minimalist aesthetic offers a soothing antidote. Minimalism invites us to slow down, declutter, and focus on the essentials.

Minimalism Getting New, Warmer Look: Nature-Inspired Design Trends

In 2024/ 2025, we’ll see a continued emphasis on clean lines, neutral color palettes, and thoughtful curation of furnishings and decor. However, the minimalist trend is also embracing a more personalized and layered approach. Allowing homeowners to infuse their living spaces with subtle personality and warmth.

In 2024, we’ve seen minimalist design integrated with other emerging trends, such as organic modern decor. The result is a harmonious blend of form and function. Where every element in the space serves a purpose and contributes to the overall sense of tranquility and balance. This beautiful fusion of minimalist principles with organic modern design combines the clean lines and clutter-free spaces of minimalism with the warmth and natural elements of organic modern style. This blend creates spaces that feel both serene and inviting. Striking a balance between minimalism’s functionality and organic design’s connection to nature.

If you like the look of bright white, minimalist organic modern interiors, check out my last post on white walls. The post breaks down why white paint works so well in these spaces and how to select the right white for your space. The post also covers the core design elements of Organic Modern design, which complement white walls.

Sustainability Meets Style: Organic Modern and Modern Vintage

Another significant trend is the rise of Modern Vintage Design, which is closely tied to thrifting and sustainability. This approach celebrates the charm of older pieces while aligning with eco-conscious values. We see elements of both Minimalism and Maximalism in this design trend.

There is a focus on quality over quantity and reduced consumption. Not only for the sake of our own mental health but also for the health of our planet. However, there is a far greater emphasis on personalizing our spaces and creating visual interest. This is accomplished through ornate trim, millwork, bold paint colors, eclectic gallery walls, and unique decor. A lot of which is thrifted or secondhand. And buying fewer new things means reducing your carbon footprint.

There is often much overlap between Organic Modern and Modern Vintage design. But Modern Vintage has some notable differences that set it apart as the bolder, more personalized design trend.

There is an undeniable romance in Modern Vintage Design that I find absolutely charming. This is my favorite design trend. I’ll also borrow ideas from Organic Modern and Cottage styles for our 80-year-old brick Tudor-style farmhouse in Northern California. Now that I have my vision, I cannot wait to bring it to life.

The emergence of this design reflects a broader shift towards thoughtful, personalized spaces that prioritize both aesthetics and ethics. Modern vintage home decor not only creates visually interesting spaces but also promotes a more sustainable approach to home decor through thrifting and repurposing. It encourages creativity and personal expression while reducing waste.

The Rise of Biophilic Design

As our collective awareness of environmental sustainability and the benefits of connecting with nature continues to grow, the interior design trend of Biophilic design will play a big role in 2024 and beyond. This design philosophy seeks to integrate natural elements, textures, and patterns into the built environment. Fostering a deeper connection between humans and the natural world.

At the core of Biophilic design is the understanding that our innate affinity for nature can have a profound impact on our physical and mental well-being. By incorporating natural materials, indoor greenery, and natural light into our living spaces, we can create a sense of calm, rejuvenation, and overall improved quality of life.

In 2024, we’ve seen a significant increase in the integration of Biophilic design elements, from the use of reclaimed wood and stone to the inclusion of living walls and indoor gardens. Homeowners and designers alike embrace the power of natural textures, patterns, and earthy color palettes to craft living environments that feel inherently connected to the natural world.

Moreover, the rise of Biophilic design will extend beyond the aesthetics of a space, influencing the overall functionality and layout of a home. Biophilic design has an architectural component that focuses on greater emphasis on open floor plans, seamless indoor-outdoor transitions, and the strategic placement of windows and skylights to maximize natural light and ventilation.

As sustainability and wellness continue to be top priorities in 2024, the Biophilic design trend will only grow in prominence. Offering a holistic approach to creating living spaces that nourish both the body and the soul.

The Resurgence of Bold, Vibrant Colors

In a world that has been largely defined by the minimalist and neutral color palettes of recent years, the interior design trend of bold, vibrant colors has made a resounding comeback in 2024. Homeowners and designers alike are embracing the power of chromatic expression. And using color as a tool to infuse their living spaces with energy, personality, and a touch of unapologetic flair.

Gone are the days of only playing it safe with muted tones and monochromatic schemes. In 2024, we’ve witnessed a surge of interior design projects that incorporate bold, saturated hues. From rich, jewel-toned accents to vibrant, statement-making wall colors. This trend is driven by a desire to create living environments that are visually stimulating, emotionally evocative, and reflective of individual style and personality.

The resurgence of vibrant colors in interior design is based on the need for a sense of playfulness, joy, and optimism in our living spaces. As we continue to navigate the challenges of the modern world, homeowners are seeking refuge in environments that lift their spirits and foster a sense of personality and creativity.

This is most evident in the color-drenching trend like this gorgeous room!

Bringing Back Fun with Color Design Trends

In 2024, we’ve seen bold color design trends manifest in a variety of ways. From the use of striking, high-contrast color palettes to the inclusion of vibrant, patterned textiles and artwork. Designers will experiment with the strategic placement of color. Using it to define specific zones, highlight architectural features, and create a sense of drama and visual interest throughout the space.

Moreover, the resurgence of bold, vibrant colors will not be limited to the walls and furnishings. We’ll also see a growing trend of incorporating these hues into the functional elements of a space, such as cabinetry, lighting fixtures, and even appliances. The result is a living environment that is not only aesthetically striking but also reflective of the homeowner’s personal and playful approach to design.

Embracing the Artisanal and Handcrafted

As the world becomes increasingly digitized and mass-produced, the interior design trend of embracing the artisanal and handcrafted is gaining momentum in 2024. Homeowners and designers are seeking out unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that tell a story and showcase the skills and creativity of talented artisans and craftspeople.

This growing appreciation for the handmade and the artisanal is driven by a desire for greater authenticity, individuality, and a connection to the human touch in our living spaces. In a world that is often dominated by machine-made, cookie-cutter products, the inclusion of artisanal and handcrafted elements offers a refreshing antidote, infusing a sense of warmth, personality, and emotional resonance into the home.

In 2024, we’ve seen a surge in the demand for handmade furniture, textiles, pottery, and decorative accessories that bear the distinctive mark of their creators. Homeowners will seek out local artisans, independent makers, and small-scale producers, prioritizing quality craftsmanship and the preservation of traditional techniques over mass-produced alternatives.

So, this could be a great time to start that Etsy store you’ve always dreamed of!

Moreover, the embrace of the artisanal and handcrafted will extend beyond the tangible items in a space, influencing the overall design aesthetic and creating a sense of cohesion and authenticity throughout the living environment. Designers will curate collections of artisanal pieces that complement one another, weaving a narrative of creativity, skill, and a deep appreciation for the handmade.

As the value placed on sustainability, ethical consumption, and supporting local economies continues to grow, the interior design trend of embracing the artisanal and handcrafted will only gain more prominence in 2024 and beyond. Homeowners will use these unique, one-of-a-kind pieces as a way to express their personal style, support their communities, and create living spaces that feel truly authentic and reflective of their values.

Buy locally can be more expensive so do this strategically. Have a mix of new, thrifted, and locally sourced items to make your home yours, without going over budget.

Design Trends of 2024 and Beyond

The world of interior design in 2024 is a dynamic and ever-evolving landscape, marked by the rise of diverse trends and stylistic preferences. The frame of our newish couch broke, but thanks to The frame of our newish couch broke, but thanks to a service warranty, we got it checked out. Turns out, a knot in the wood caused a main support bar to crack in three directions—bad enough that the repair guy wanted to haul the whole couch to the shop for a few days. That sounded awful, so I asked if he could get it started and show me how to finish the job.

He was awesome, walked me through the first part, and left me with wood glue and torque screws. A few hours later, the couch was back in business.

A few years ago, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to tackle something like this, but learning to DIY has changed that. It may seem like a small thing to some, but I love the confidence that building and repairing things in my own home has brought me. DIY is about learning, problem-solving, getting creative, and most importantly—trying.

What did Michael Jordan say? “You miss 100% of the couches you don’t fix?” Oh wait, that might have been Michael Scott. Either way, I’m glad I went for it.

We had to cancel all of our plans, including our annual Christmas Eve party, which was a major letdown. I was down for the count for a few weeks, so the holiday decor stuck around a little longer than usual… like, into the second week of January.

Then CapCut decided to dip for a minute, and this reel got stuck in limbo. But it’s back, I am mostly recovered, and our regular decor is back in place.

As much as I love Christmas decor, it feels good to have a clean, minimal living room again. All of my plants are back in place, we hung up some new artwork, and added wireless sconces above our mantle that pull everything together and brighten up the room.

Flocking is similar to velvet in appearance and texture, but unlike velvet, which is a woven fabric, flocking is made from small, short fibers called "flock" which are adhered to a surface with an adhesive.
