Non-Toxic Laundry Detergent (My New Scent Obsession!)

Non-toxic laundry detergent is one of the easiest swaps you can make—and honestly? It makes a big difference in your daily routine.

Like a lot of people, I’m on a never-ending quest to reduce the amount of toxic products in our home, especially with kids in the home. It’s wild how many of the things we use every day are full of harmful chemicals, many of which we’re only now beginning to understand the long-term effects of, both on our health and the environment.

I’m not perfect about this (at all), but I recently swapped most of our household cleaners for Blueland products. I keep my cleaning routine pretty simple, so I only ordered five of their products. I’ll a full review soon, but in this post, we’re focusing on my new obsession: their non-toxic laundry detergent.

And I do mean obsession.

I’m an Amazon Associate, which means I may earn a tiny commission if you shop through my links (no extra cost to you!). I only link to stuff I’ve actually tried and liked. Thanks for supporting my little corner of the internet—it seriously means a lot.

Meet the Star: Blueland Non-Toxic Laundry Detergent

I ordered the Blueland laundry tablets in the Spring Bloom scent—and I swear, it smells like a wildflower meadow by the ocean on a perfect coastal day. It’s light, crisp, and floral, described by the brand as “wildflowers and sun-ripened citrus.” I’m pretty scent-sensitive (hello, migraines), and both my husband and I have skin that rebels against most fragrances. But neither of us has had any issues with this one.

In fact, it smells incredible and stays on our clothes for days without being overpowering. And they come in these adorable Forever Tins- meaning no non-recyclable plastic bottle!

Also our clothes feel so clean. Like, luxury hotel towel clean. I had no idea our old detergent was leaving behind a residue that made everything smell and feel… mildewy? Gunky? Tacky? Gross, either way.

Turns out, the culprit wasn’t just the laundry soap—I also learned (admittedly, possibly as the last adult human on Earth to learn this) that you’re supposed to leave your front-loading washer door open after use. So I started doing that, and I also began using washing machine cleaners. That helped, but things still weren’t great—until I switched to Blueland.

If your washing machine could use a refresh, check out this article below.

Musty Smell in Washing Machine? Here’s How to Fix It!

A Little Extra Boost: Oxi Laundry Booster

I also picked up Blueland’s Oxi Laundry Booster in the Clear Skies scent to tackle our whites and more heavily soiled loads. The smell? Also amazing. The two scents complement each other beautifully. I’m now that person who randomly sniffs her shirt throughout the day. I barely wear perfume anymore because I love the way our laundry smells.

It made our sheets feel heavenly, kept our whites bright, and replaced my beloved OxiClean—without the plastic packaging and questionable ingredients.

The Oxi booster comes as a powder in a paper bag that you pour into your Forever Tin and the lid to the tin has a depression for the perfect measurement of Oxi Laundry Booster per load.

Mini Laundry Room Makeover (Because Folding Deserves a Throne)

While I was upgrading my laundry soap, I gave our laundry room a tiny glow-up. Nothing wild—just a washer and dryer topper to cover the scratched surfaces of our washer and dryer and give me a proper folding station. If you’re like me, if clothes don’t get folded immediately after drying, they’re living in the dryer or basket for the next… let’s say 48 hours- at least.

It honestly makes folding clothes so much easier—and surprisingly enjoyable. Even my husband, who usually doesn’t notice things like decor or design updates, commented on how great it looked and how it tied the whole room together. The topper really brightens up the space, so it’s not just functional—it’s genuinely beautiful, too.

I also added a marble lazy Susan to store our laundry tablets and Oxi booster, and threw in some fresh lavender from the yard, because why not romanticize laundry?

More Reasons Why I Love Blueland Non-Toxic Laundry Soap

Besides the scent and the effectiveness, here are a few more reasons I’ve converted:

✅ Plastic-Free, Aesthetic Packaging

Blueland’s laundry tablets and boosters come in cute and colorful, refillable Forever Tins, and the refills arrive in paper bags. No more bulky plastic jugs to send to rot in a landfill. Just cute little containers that actually look nice on your shelf.

✅ Certifications That Matter

This isn’t greenwashing. Blueland is:

  • Leaping Bunny certified (cruelty-free), A top priority for me as an animal lover!
  • B Corp certified and Best of B Corp
  • EWG verified
  • Climate Neutral
  • USDA BioPreferred
  • EPA Safer Choice certified

Their ingredients are tested to avoid fossil fuel-based components, and their products are made in facilities powered by renewable energy. Even their ink is non-VOC and their packaging tape is water-activated and non-toxic. They’re doing it right, top to bottom. For people, the animals, and the planet.

✅ Ethical Production

According to Blueland, all of their manufacturers must pass UN Global Compact audits and, for China-based manufacturers, BSCI audits from third-party auditors. That’s rare transparency and a commitment to human rights, and I respect it.

How to Use It

Honestly, it’s easier than liquid soap.

  1. Drop one tablet directly into the drum of your washing machine.
  2. If you’re using the Oxi Laundry Booster, use the depression in the lid that came with the Forever Tin to measure out the correct amount (approximately two tablespoons if you don’t have the Forever Tin and Lid) and pour it into the drum of your machine with the tablet and add your laundry.
  3. Done. That’s it.

Tip

For stubborn stains, Blueland says you can also “soak clothes for up to 6 hours with one dose (of Oxi Laundry Booster) per gallon of water.” I put this to the test on our kids’ lunch bags the other day, and it worked surprisingly well. I filled the bathtub halfway with warm water, added one portion of the Oxi Booster, and let the lunch boxes soak for about four hours. No scrubbing needed—it released a ton of dirt and old food buildup just from soaking. After that, I gave them a quick rinse and set them out in the sun to dry.

Let’s Talk Cost: Non-Toxic Laundry Detergents

We all want to do the right thing, but it’s hard to do the right thing when it costs a lot more. With Blueland, you can do the right thing and not pay (much) more. Blueland non-toxic laundry soap costs about 31 cents per load, which sits squarely in the middle of the average based on the research of a few of my favorite brands.

I used Ecos for years—it’s super affordable, avoids a lot of the nasties, and available at Costco in a giant bottle, which is great for our big family—but that giant plastic jug has to go somewhere when you are done with it, and laundry bottles are notoriously difficult to recycle.

But also, it left our clothes feeling sort of gummy and smelly. It wasn’t until switching to Blueland that I realized: Oh. This is what clean feels like.

A Quick Trip Down Tide-Scented Memory Lane

I grew up absolutely loving the smell of Tide laundry detergent (I’m sensing a pattern here). But we didn’t have much money, and Tide was way too expensive to buy regularly. This might sound a little wild, but I literally got a box of powdered Tide for my birthday every year as a teenager because I loved the scent so much. I saved it just for my clothes and my mom’s—my brother’s and dad’s could smell like the generic stuff. Sorry, fellas.

As much as I adored Tide back then, I wouldn’t touch it now. That toxic blue sludge in a giant plastic jug doesn’t align with how I want to care for my kids, our home, or the planet.

Final Thoughts: I’m In

Between the effectiveness, the incredible scent, the thoughtful packaging, and the company’s ethical mission, Blueland non-toxic laundry detergent is here to stay in my cleaning lineup. You can find it [on Amazon] or order directly from Blueland. They offer subscriptions (easy to cancel) and pretty frequent offer discounts— I got mine around Earth day when I got an extra 15% off on top of the 20% subscriber discount.

Try it. Smell your shirt throughout the day. Let me know if you’re as obsessed as I am!

The frame of our newish couch broke, but thanks to The frame of our newish couch broke, but thanks to a service warranty, we got it checked out. Turns out, a knot in the wood caused a main support bar to crack in three directions—bad enough that the repair guy wanted to haul the whole couch to the shop for a few days. That sounded awful, so I asked if he could get it started and show me how to finish the job.

He was awesome, walked me through the first part, and left me with wood glue and torque screws. A few hours later, the couch was back in business.

A few years ago, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to tackle something like this, but learning to DIY has changed that. It may seem like a small thing to some, but I love the confidence that building and repairing things in my own home has brought me. DIY is about learning, problem-solving, getting creative, and most importantly—trying.

What did Michael Jordan say? “You miss 100% of the couches you don’t fix?” Oh wait, that might have been Michael Scott. Either way, I’m glad I went for it.

Our Christmas was majorly interrupted by the flu t Our Christmas was majorly interrupted by the flu this year. We had to cancel all of our plans, including our annual Christmas Eve party, which was a major letdown. I was down for the count for a few weeks, so the holiday decor stuck around a little longer than usual… like, into the second week of January.

Then CapCut decided to dip for a minute, and this reel got stuck in limbo. But it’s back, I am mostly recovered, and our regular decor is back in place.

As much as I love Christmas decor, it feels good to have a clean, minimal living room again. All of my plants are back in place, we hung up some new artwork, and added wireless sconces above our mantle that pull everything together and brighten up the room.

Flocking is similar to velvet in appearance and texture, but unlike velvet, which is a woven fabric, flocking is made from small, short fibers called "flock" which are adhered to a surface with an adhesive.

The full tutorial on my blog breaks down how to make them using simple materials most people already have at home—acrylic paint and baking soda.
