Vintage Halloween Decorations: How to Get the Look
We are thrifting, shopping, DIYing, and summoning that 90s Halloween witch movie aesthetic to pull off this look. Hocus Pocus, The Witches, Practical Magic, and my favorite, The Craft. There is just something about that grungy 90s goth aesthetic that I love. And the beautiful and eerie Victorian homes all those TV and movie witches lived in, with their deep jewel-toned walls, vintage wallpaper, and antique furniture- swoon!
Our house is about 80 years old, but after some very modern renovations by the previous owner, it has lost a lot of its charm. But, I am slowly working toward bringing that back! Starting with my dark and elegant, vintage-inspired Halloween decorations.
However, I have young stepkids, so I will include some cute and fun things for them, especially in their spaces. But most of the decor in the main living area will be for me. Because yes, I am that clichéd Fall and Halloween-obsessed hipster/ punk, now in her mid-thirties who still wears mostly all black but lives in the suburbs and takes the kids to after-school sports in a safe, dependable car. Time comes for us all, huh?
So here I sit, squarely in the middle of cute, fun decor and dark, and witchy decor. Honestly, I love both. I love making crafts with our kids and styling items from my creepy collections. Luckily, my stepkids also love a little scariness during this season!
My Halloween decor style reflects both serious reverence of the season and a deep love of all things modern Halloween. I hope that this article helps you find your perfect Halloween decor style!
Fall Feeling
I might lose some of you just looking for Halloween decor ideas on this next point, but for me, Fall and Halloween feel sacred. In a light-hearted, but equally strong sense, I love the scary and spooky movies, the chilly weather, the changing leaves, and the time at home. But there’s more to it than that.
The day-to-day minutia of life can be all-consuming, and as much as I love being outdoors, I find myself a little disconnected from the natural world at times. But there is nothing like a change of the weather to make me pause and consider the wonder that surrounds us.
I always feel a burst of energy when fall hits. There is so much promise in every change of the seasons. I think we can all feel the change in the air when the seasons change. But Fall just happens to be my favorite.
Fall is a thing of great beauty, but it also means the end of something. It means the end of summer and the end of the bounty of the harvest season. It means the end of the life cycle of the leaves of the deciduous trees, whose vivid foliage heralds in the change of season with a colorful cacophony. Something about that feels deserving of a little reverence and revelry.
Just a Little Witchy
Halloween is a time that feels a little easier to publicly share a little of my wild curiosity and penchant for mystical and magic things. Time to make wreaths and herb bundles, and put out the crystals, copper pots, brass, candles, brooms, and perhaps a spellbook? That all works well with vintage and dark academia-inspired Halloween decor. So, go ahead, and incorporate a little magic into your Halloween decor!
But I’m Also Here for the Fun, Campy Parts of Halloween
As I said, I love both sides of Halloween from the campy, modern, sweet-filled holiday to the ancient Gaelic harvest traditions of Samhain (pronounced ‘sow-win’). Read more about that here if you are interested!
I’m not even a little ashamed of it. I love and was designed for Fall and Halloween. I love every aspect of it from the weather to the sweaters, the colors to the horror, to the spooky and the spicy- yes, I also love pumpkin spice- who doesn’t?!
If any of that resonates with you, hi, hello, welcome friend. You might also love the following witchy, vintage + dark academia-inspired Halloween decorations, some of which, you might just want to keep all year round.
Perhaps you want to try your hand at making your decor, or maybe you are short on time and want to buy it ready it go. Either way, these 31 ideas are sure to frighten and inspire!

Thrifting Your Vintage Halloween Decorations
I always like to start at the thrift store before buying anything new. Here are a few items to look out for:
- Candles/ candle Stick holders
- Vintage mirrors or frames
- Pumpkins and fall florals
- Interesting vases, bowls, and plates with a vintage floral pattern
- Vintage books
- Amber glass bottles and anything copper
- Plaid, floral, or striped pillows and textiles
Finding vintage items in good shape is ideal, but in case you can’t, there are many ways to age items to make them look vintage! It’s hard to give details without being specific about the item, but one go-to technique of mine is to use Rub n Buff and Antiquing wax to give an aged brass effect on candle sticks, mirrors, and frames. Another trick I love is adding baking soda to acrylic paint to give an aged, earthy look. This works well for glass and ceramic vases.
Find inspirational photos, see what you have, and try to fill gaps with new and thrifted items, and if you can’t find the right pieces, make them!
Home decor items don’t exist in a vacuum, they will all speak to one another once arranged, so get creative and keep an open mind and an eye out wherever you are shopping this fall!
Let’s dig in!
1. Through the Looking Glass
An apothecary cabinet like this is forever on my thrift wish list. I am patiently waiting for the day I stumble upon one of these gorgeous pieces in the wild. But until then, I can replicate this decor in for my Halloween displays. The beauty of this style lies in the fact that each element is unique, so you can represent yourself and your story in this kind of eclectic display. Lean your favorite artwork on the wall, or add your favorite sculptures or knickknacks. Find any glass jars or bottles (amber glass works very well in this aesthetic) and fill them with dried florals. Display little curiosities in these gorgeous bell-shaped glass domes. Add a little dried moss to create a spooky little scene under the glass.
2. Candle Lit Gallery Wall
You could absolutely achieve this look in any room with lots of candles and moody eclectic decor and art, but it really looks incredible on a black wall. If you have a space where this could work, consider a black accent wall! Black accent walls are really having a moment in 2024 design anyway. Behr’s color of the year in 2024 is Cracked Pepper, a deep matte charcoal, almost black shade. You can always paint it again after the holiday if it doesn’t work for you!
If you want this look but don’t want the risk of open flame, I have and love these faux candles. I use them throughout the year, but mostly around Halloween and Christmas.
3. Impractical Magic: Floating Candles
I mean common, this feels like it was designed for me and my family! It is both eerie and whimsical! I am absolutely trying this one in our home!
Attach varying lengths of fishing line or any transparent string to faux candles with glue or tape and attach to your ceiling using clear or white command strips of this super strong clear double-sided adhesive tape or Command hooks.
4. A Collector’s Wall of Curiosities
Create a gallery wall of your favorite vintage prints and artworks in thrifted frames. Use some of the ideas below to create your own terrifying taxidermy. Hang unexpected items that evoke a little mystery.
5. Anatomical Heart + Florals
I am fascinated by human anatomy and love flowers, so this is one I”‘ll be creating in the next few weeks. I might try to make my own with with air clay or paper mache. But if you are short on time, you can use this resin heart vase or another similar product to speed up the process.
6. Cozy and Earthy
7. Macabre Display
To recreate this look, try buying a cheap Halloween skeleton and removing the vertebrae, and spray painting them black. Attach that to any kind of base (an upside bowl or saucer will work!) and add a real or faux black candle.
8. Gothic Gallery Wall
Just another gorgeous and understated gallery wall, that is reminiscent of vintage Halloween. I love the tiny details of the wall-hung curio cabinet.
9. Decorations from the Natural World
I am fortunate to live in a somewhat rural area with great oak trees, ancient redwoods, and a river, so I love foraging for my Holiday decor. Last Christmas I harvested boughs from our Douglas Fir evergreen tree for our mantle decor. I also love gathering and drying sage and lavender from my garden.
Moss feels a little spooky, doesn’t it? This kind of moss grows readily in most parts of North America, but please be mindful and only pick up dried dead moss! Picking living moss is disruptive to the microenvironment it belongs to, in addition to releasing carbon into the air.
If you live somewhere with access to the outdoors, forage for sticks and flora you can dry to use in your decor. Just be mindful of what you are picking!
10. Bright With Black
This clean minimal look works well with white walls and would be easy to recreate with some black and white photos and vintage prints.
11. Antique Mystique
Creating a space with vintage/ dark academia-inspired Halloween decor involves layering items of interest and creating little spooky vignettes around your home.
12. Life and Death
Until now, I hadn’t considered how I would incorporate my 50+ houseplants into my Halloween decor. My collection has grown a lot in the last year.
If you want your plants to blend into your Halloween decor, find some interesting planters or black baskets to drop them in for the next few months.
13. Gorgeous Gold, Blush, and Black Vintage
Just one more example of a stunning, dark gallery wall. The eclectic gallery way is almost synonymous with modern vintage and vintage/ dark decor. The blush elements in this scene soften it just a little, giving it a romantic twist.
14. Minimalist Cheesecloth Ghost
These are easy and fun to make. In fact, I am making these with my stepkids this weekend. All you need is cheesecloth, liquid starch or glue and water, and materials like a jar, balloon, paper towel roll, pipe cleaners, etc. to make the armature for the ghost forms. I’ll share ours when we finish them!
15. Haunted Mirror
I absolutely want to make one of these, but I might need to wait a few more years so it doesn’t scare our kids!
You could easily make this with a mirror, a plastic skeleton, and some good super glue!
16. Gold and Black Snakes in a Vintage Frame
This is a super easy DIY. Thrift any vintage frame and get some cheap rubber snakes. Spray paint or hand paint the snakes. Add a simple design in the background to elevate the piece and add this to your spooky vintage gallery wall.
17. Taxidermy Tableau
This look could also be achieved with synthetic bones if you don’t have any animal skeletons on hand!
18. Upholstered Frame And Butterflies
This is a great example of layered and interesting artwork that could be completely customized to your liking. All you need is a frame, a mat, your fabric of choice, and a small painting or object to display in the center. Disassemble the frame and use hot glue to attach your fabric to the mat. You might also want to paint or add interesting paper to the backing board. From there, just install your focal point in the center of the backing board.
19. Vintage Florals and Gold
Another take on the faux snake taxidermy idea with a feminine twist.
20. Dark Cottage
This moody and minimal display could easily be recreated with old books, brass candle sticks and candles, vintage art, and amber glass with dried florals or bare branches. If you want to splurge a little, the wicker hats from Studio McGee are darling.
21. Vintage Brooch Spiders
These are gorgeous. If you want to try this, check out the jewelry counter at your local thrift store for vintage brooches.
22. Eclectic Ensemble
Try creating spooky vintage displays on trays to place in your kitchen or your dining room table.
23. White Skull and Insect Taxidermy
If your decor or Halloween decorations lean a little more on the lighter side, this might suit your tastes.
24. Double Trouble
Thrift two vintage frames to get the layered look of this double-framed arachnid display.
25. Spooky and Sophisticated
You can add a little vintage Halloween charm to your bookshelves by adding some spooky and stylish decor. Think vintage prints, interesting glass pieces, animal sculptures, vases, vintage books, candles, and aged jack-o-lanterns.
26. For My Fellow Green Witches
Give your plants a new pot, at least for the season, and add moon-shaped copper support to help your little green friends thrive.
27. Medusa’s Wreath
Create a dramatic statement at your front doors with this snake-covered wreath.
To create this, use any wreath base and attach rubber snakes with wire or hot glue. Spray Paint if needed.
28. Amber Glass and Leaves
If your vintage vibe is a little more Gilmore Girls than Charmed, this warm vintage display might be perfect for you.
Of course, one can love both! I certainly do!
29. Black Rope Candles
A much more minimalist approach for those who want to add a little touch of vintage Halloween decor.

Incorporate earth-toned florals, stems, and pumpkins to celebrate the harvest and give your home a cozy vibe. This display demonstrates the variety and character that is a hallmark of this style. Choose elements that speak to you and you will create a vintage Halloween display you love.
